Install so you can use an image enhancer on Windows
Paste this into Windows Terminal or Command Prompt:
winget install -e --id Upscayl.UpscaylCopy
If winget is missing, install App Installer from Microsoft, then paste again. Official Microsoft links only. GitHub Releases is the other path. For most PCs take upscayl-2.15.0-win.exe. A zip also sits on that release if you want a zip. Live tag observed: V2.15, 25 December 2024. Do not invent a newer number here. File notes sit on Image upscaler releases. Run the installer on the same machine. Files stay on GitHub. If SmartScreen warns on a first run, read the publisher. Prefer the GitHub asset over a renamed copy from search.
How to use an image enhancer
- Install Upscayl with the command on this page, or take
upscayl-2.15.0-win.exefrom GitHub Releases. A zip also exists on that release if you want a zip. - Open Upscayl. You should get a window on this PC, not a website that asks you to upload the picture.
- Select a picture on this PC. Pick a file you already saved: a screenshot, a PNG, a small graphic, a scan. Drag and drop works in the app if that is easier than the picker.
- Pick the type in the app and set an output folder. Use the controls the window actually shows. Start with the default type on a first run. Point the output at a folder you control.
- Run, then open the new file and check it looks cleaner and sharper. Stay on this PC. Open the result in a viewer that is not this app so you know the file is real.
That list is the image enhancer path. You are improving a picture that already lives here. You are not treating a camera roll as the whole job. That photo job sits on Photo enhancer.
What an image enhancer is on this PC
A picture can look soft, blocky, or thin when you zoom in. An image enhancer writes a new file that looks cleaner and sharper than the one you opened. Upscayl is one AGPL-3.0 program that does that in a desktop window on Windows 10 or later. You install it, you select a file, you run, you check the output.
Home on this site is the enlarge path. This page stays on cleaner and sharper. The program still writes more pixels. That is how these models work. The search that landed here is the enhance search: you care how the picture looks, not only how wide the file became.
The app does not create the picture. If the file is missing, still in a chat you never stored, or still named .crdownload, the window has nothing honest to read. Save the picture first. Then select that path.
Select a picture already on this PC
Start with one file you can recognize. A screenshot of a setting. A logo saved as PNG. A diagram that got stored at a small size. Confirm the window shows that picture. Then run. A first run that has never finished one good file is a bad place to dump a whole folder.
Select Image in the app is the usual path. Drag and drop can also work. We will not invent extra menu names. If the picker cannot see the file, you are in the wrong folder. Browse to where you actually saved it.
A picture on a network share is still a file. Wait until the share is available. A picture on a USB stick needs the stick plugged in. Ejecting the stick while the app is writing can fail the output. Copy it to Documents if you need it after the stick leaves.
Batch in the app is for a folder of pictures you already trust. Do not start there. Finish one file. Open the output. If that output looks like the job you wanted, then point at a folder.
Cleaner and sharper, with more pixels
The enhance job is look. Edges should read. Type in a screenshot should stop looking like mush. A small graphic should stop looking like a handful of squares. Open the new file at 100 percent in a viewer. If you cannot tell it from the source, the source may already have been sharp, or the file may be a blur that this program will not fix.
The program guesses detail. It is not a magic restore of a photo that never had the detail. The official project is clear: it can help low resolution and pixelated pictures, and it will not de-blur a shot that is out of focus. If the screenshot is a smear, save a new screenshot. If the graphic is a tiny JPEG full of compression, the output can still show that compression, only larger.
We will not invent a sharpness score. We will not invent a megapixel claim. You have two files. You look at both. That is the test.
Set the output folder before you run if you want the new file somewhere you can find. If you skip that, the app may write next to the source. Either way, note the path. Enhancing does not replace the original unless you overwrite it on purpose. Keep the original until you like the new one.
First run and the GPU
After install, open the app once before you hunt a second program named enhancer. Select one picture you trust. Confirm the preview shows. If the window is empty, you have not selected a file yet, or the path failed.
You need a Vulkan compatible GPU. Many integrated chips will not run these models. That is hardware. No second installer will invent a GPU. If the app reports it cannot use the device, read the message, update the graphics driver from the GPU maker if you own that update, and try one more time. If it still fails, this image enhancer path is closed on that machine.
Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt on a first exe. Read the publisher. Prefer GitHub Releases. Winget skips some of that path because Microsoft already listed the package. If winget is missing, the exe is still honest. Do not fetch a second setup from search.
Updates live on GitHub Releases and on winget when the package updates. We do not invent a newer number than 2.15.0 here. Read the release. Usual Windows pick is still upscayl-2.15.0-win.exe. The zip is still a zip of this project.
When the new file looks the same
A source that is already large and sharp will not jump. That is expected. This job helps a small, blocky, or thin file. A screenshot of a crisp UI that is already large does not need this path.
A file that is actually a PDF renamed to .png will confuse you. Look at the real type. This program opens pictures. Export a PNG or JPEG from the program that made the file, then select that.
A zero-byte file will not enhance. Download it again from the place you got it. A file still named .tmp is not finished. Wait until the name is a real picture type.
If the app reports the file is damaged, try a second copy of the same picture if you have one. This page will not repair bytes. It will not host a recovery tool. If the copy in email still opens on another machine, save a fresh copy here.
School PCs, labs, and uninstall
A lab image may block winget and unknown installers. Then this image enhancer install is closed for that hour. Do not fetch a wrapper to get around policy. Use a tool already on the image, or wait until you control the PC.
A borrowed laptop you return in twenty minutes is a bad place to leave upscayl-2.15.0-win.exe. Use what is already on the machine, or do not install.
Uninstall is Apps in Windows, or the project uninstall. Quitting the window is not uninstall. If you only wanted to enhance one file, quit first. If you want the program gone, uninstall. Fetch again from GitHub Releases or winget, not from a wrapper.
x64 installer and zip
Usual Windows pick is upscayl-2.15.0-win.exe. The same GitHub release also lists a zip. They are different packages of the same project. Pick one path. Do not run the installer and unpack the zip on top of each other because the first one felt slow.
Match the file name on the page. Do not invent a newer tag than 2.15.0. Hash notes, if any, live on GitHub Releases, not here. The install pointer is Install on the home page.
What this image enhancer will not do

It will not be a camera-photo article. That work sits on Photo enhancer. It will not host the installer. It will not be a star rating. It will not crop, caption, or lay out a poster. It will not de-blur a shot that never had focus. It will not invent a missing GPU.
Where the new file lives
The output sits where you pointed the output folder, or next to the source if that is what the app did. The original stays unless you overwrote it. The enhancer writes. It does not empty your Pictures folder. If you copy the new file somewhere else, that is your copy. We will not invent a cloud for this project.
PNG, JPEG, and similar types are what you already know. Pick the type the app lists. We will not invent a format the window does not show. Open the output in Photos or another viewer. If that viewer opens it, the file is real.
Shared machines and the next file
On a family PC, say if you installed a new program. On a work PC, follow local policy. If policy blocks unknown exe files, winget may still work, or it may not. If both are blocked, stop. Softonic is still the wrong host in that hour.
Open the next picture the same way. Install once. Enhance many files. You do not reinstall for each image. If a new file fails, the file or the GPU is the suspect, not a missing second enhancer.
